This week, we had the pleasure of chatting with Ted Gates from our Fort Myers office. Ted shared insights into his boating roots, his journey into the marine industry, and his experiences working with clients as part of the Yachts360 team
Where is your hometown and what are your first boating memories?
I grew up in Lake City, MN, on a wide stretch of the Mississippi River called Lake Pepin. Known as the birthplace of waterskiing and home to the largest freshwater marina on the entire Mississippi, it’s where my love for boats began. I’ve been hooked on boating since I could walk—fishing with my grandfather and going on adventures with my dad solidified my passion. As I got older, it was all about water sports, cruising, and running boats so others could enjoy the experience.
How did you become involved in boating industry?
In 2000, I started a yacht management and detailing business, servicing seasonal boats in Minnesota during the summer and working in Fort Myers, FL, during the winter. Each fall, I worked the haulout at Lake City Marina, lifting, blocking, and setting boats for winter storage. In 2006, I expanded into yacht brokerage alongside my management business. By 2010, I moved to Fort Myers full-time, captaining yacht charters throughout Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to meet and work with incredible people in the marine industry, which has greatly enhanced my knowledge and skills.
What is your favorite aspect of being a Yachts360 broker?
The best part of being a Yachts360 broker is the opportunity to combine my lifelong passion for boating with helping others find their perfect vessel. Whether it’s guiding first-time buyers, working with seasoned boaters, or showcasing the unique lifestyle that yachting offers, every day is rewarding. Plus, the chance to work with an incredible team and connect with clients from all walks of life makes this career truly special.
